Okay let’s open with two facts about myself. 1) I am a white man, from the middle class, a child of priviledge, and like all priviledged people I hate to admit it. 2) I’m not planning to agonize too hard about how to put things (because I have no readers so wth) so I’m probably gonna say something racist or idiotic or both and I can only hope that the context will show that I’m not that terrible. Okay let’s get started.   In my thinking and speaking about race I have always tried to be objective, but I think it is important to also be subjective. I have been wanting to write about my personal experience in this racist world as a white person, but been afraid to because most people that do that are racists. But I think that by examining my own racism and experience I may be able to shed some light on the motivations of racists in general. This idea is supremely important to me because as long as the narrative is woke poor and middle-class people versus racist poor and middle c

single issue voting

My dad is an episcopal priest, who does a lot of work in interfaith dialogue. He always tells me that he finds it much easier to talk to members of a different religion than to non-affiliated ‘spiritual’ people or agnostics. His point was that people of faith understand each other, even if their religions are different; it doesn’t matter what you believe just believe in something, that was his take away. This same philosophy applies to politics and social issues. I’ve been told that one issue of the left is single-issue activists and single-issue protesting, but I don’t think that’s true. The issue is the lack of dialogue and cooperation across these single issues. If you believe passionately in women’s right to choose than your energy should be focused there, because that is where your energy does the most good. You don’t need to struggle to twist and pull women’s rights into black rights or gay rights, although perhaps womens rights was a bad example due to the existence of black

Do liberals hate free speech?

I’m listening to the NYT Daily Podcast’s story on ‘free speech on college campuses’. First of all, it seemed to lean fairly heavily on the side of ‘free speech’ which in this context requires the silencing of liberal protesters. Okay let me be honest, I’m pretty conflicted on this. For the purposes of argument conservatives inevitably eschew their Ann Coulters, Milo Yanniwhatevers and whatever rabble rousers who are the ‘victims’ and bring up some young fresh-faced conservative with a tie and an eastern accent from wherever the hell these people come from, and he (always he) talks calmly about the death of free speech and open conversation by the actions of self-righteous liberal snowflakes, although inevitably he tries to be as non-threatening and calm as possible for all the folks watching at home. Well I’ve got to say the argument about open conversation is a good one. It’s true that none of us talk enough to people we disagree with, are not open enough to ideas that conflict with

How to make an alternative fact

Watch a 'fact' made before the public’s eyes: 1)        Trump fires the FBI director by a public letter 2)        In the letter trump mentions that said FBI director told him 3 times he was not the subject of any investigation, this is not corroborated by any public evidence 3)        News outlets read the letter on air and discuss the implications of firing the FBI director, while glazing over or not mentioning at all the supposed 3 times the director reassured the president 4)        People around the country hear on the news that the FBI director told the president 3 times that he is not the subject of any investigation 5)        The president is not being investigated by the FBI, I heard it on the news

Reading the Syllabus

Okay first post, I guess I'll just describe what it's gonna be. So I spend 40 hours a week in a chair in box in a large dim room within a squat brick building by the side of a highway, staring at a computer and trying to keep despair at bay. While there I listen to podcasts, news and socialist punditry mostly, occasionally conservative pundits to try and get a sense of how the other side thinks, anyway, when my opinions bubble over I write them in an email and send it to my personal email. This blog will mostly be made up of these emails. Hopefully I'll get to the point where I feel like writing about my other interests, but I expect this will mostly be a blog for my socialist thought and righteous anger.
